Remix Assignment Remix

Original Assignment:

Each student will choose an existing, media representation of the culture, race, ethnicity, gender, nationality, religion, etc. with which he/she identifies.

Medium Constraint: The representation may be in any medium (film, photograph, visual art, poetry, literature, advertisement, news article, song, music video, etc.) but the specific media artifact they reference should be older than the student. 5 points

Creative Constraint: Students will then remix the representation present in the media artifact. The medium should stay the same from the original to your creation; lyrics - lyrics, video - video, photograph - photograph, etc. 15 points

Contextual Constraint: The remixed representation you create must demonstrate your own negotiation of identity as described above.  Your remix should also be a commentary on how that identity has been historically represented in media. 20 points

Reflection Constraint: 250 words about the Project: Artist/Teacher statements should include a discussion of the correlations and contradictions between your remix (perspectives, practices, etc.) and the historical representation of this aspect of your identity. You should also describe how this project and Barney's "Responding" essay helped you consider new ways to aid students as they discover ideas and jump into ongoing conversations about the formation of identities (culture, race, ethnicity, gender, nationality, religion). 10 points.

Remixed Assignment:

Using our reference text of “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien to discuss the concept of how lived realities of the Vietnam War differ from media narratives of it, each student will choose an existing media representation of the Vietnam War and discuss it in terms of our reference text.

Medium Constraint: The representation may be in any medium that relates to an aspect of the Vietnam War (propaganda poster, song, poem, video footage, etc.) and the media used as a reference will be “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien. 5 points

Creative Constraint: Students will then remix the representation present in the media artifact in any medium they see fit - however the medium should fit the original. The medium should stay the same from the original to your creation; propaganda poster - propaganda poster, video - video, photograph - photograph, etc. 15 points

Contextual Constraint: The remixed representation you create must demonstrate your own experience with narratives in media as described above.  Your remix should also be a commentary on how those narratives differ from lived realities of those who were a part of the Vietnam War in any capacity. 20 points

Reflection Constraint: 250 words about the Project: Artist/Teacher statements should include a discussion of the differences between your remix (perspectives, practices, etc.) and the historical representation of the Vietnam War, and how the differences served a specific purpose in furthering a specific narrative. You should also discuss how this project helps you to think critically about the way events are represented in the media and the importance of looking at all sides of a story. 10 points.
